Before One, There Is Zero

Today, I want us to sit together with the number 10, not merely as a number to calculate, but as a sacred conversation between beginning and emptiness. In numerology, 10 is often reduced to 1 because 1 + 0 equals 1. Once that calculation is made, our attention usually moves directly toward the meaning of 1, while 0 is treated as though it has nothing of its own to offer. Yet I have been wondering whether we move past zero too quickly. If zero represents nothingness, perhaps we must ask ourselves what nothingness truly means. Is it an absence without value, or could it be the quiet space from which something new is finally able to arise?

The number 1 carries the energy of beginning. It represents identity, initiative, movement, independence, and the moment when we step forward and declare that we are ready to begin again. One stands upright with presence and direction. It reminds us that we are each here to walk a path that no one else can walk in exactly the same way. Yet when 1 appears within the number 10, it does not arrive alone. It stands beside 0, and perhaps that placement is asking us to understand that every true beginning needs a space in which to take root.

Zero is often described as nothing, but I do not experience nothingness as something meaningless. I experience it as Silence, emptiness, stillness, and possibility. Zero is the pause between what has ended and what has not yet taken form. It is the sacred clearing that remains after we release what we can no longer carry. It is the quiet place where we are not required to perform, explain, produce, or prove ourselves. Within that space, we may not immediately know what is coming next, but that does not mean nothing is happening. Some of the most important movements within us begin where no one can see them.

We often say that we want a new beginning, but we do not always allow ourselves to enter the emptiness that comes before it. We want the clarity of 1 without surrendering to the uncertainty of 0. We want to know where we are going before we have taken the time to understand where we have been. We try to add something new to lives that are already overflowing, without first asking what must be released, completed, forgiven, or laid down.

This is why I feel that the number 10 carries a deeper teaching than the energy of 1 alone. The 1 says, “Begin,” while the 0 asks, “Have you made room for the beginning you are calling forward?” Together, they remind us that renewal is not always about doing more. Sometimes renewal begins when we stop long enough to hear what our constant movement has prevented us from hearing.

Many of us have spent years moving through life in survival mode. We have worked to pay bills, care for our families, create stability, fulfill our responsibilities, and respond to whatever needed our immediate attention. When life is asking us to survive, we naturally focus on what must be handled in front of us. We make practical decisions because other lives may depend upon us, and we learn how to keep moving even when we are tired.

Yet during those years, parts of us can quietly be placed to the side. Our dreams, creativity, rest, spiritual needs, and unanswered questions may be postponed until a better time. We tell ourselves that we will return to them once life becomes easier, the bills are paid, the children need less from us, or the conditions finally feel right. We continue waiting for a spacious moment in the future, only to discover that every season brings its own responsibilities.

When we are raising a child alone, this postponement can become even more familiar. Our minds are continually considering what is best for the child, what they need now, and what will support their future. We become accustomed to placing ourselves after everyone and everything else. We may not even realize how often we have done it because love can make sacrifice feel natural. Still, there comes a moment when we must recognize that caring for ourselves does not take love away from our children. It teaches them that a life of love should not require the complete disappearance of the self.

There is rarely a perfect moment to return to ourselves. There may never be a day when every obligation has been fulfilled, every concern resolved, and every person satisfied. There is only the moment we are living now. This does not mean we abandon our responsibilities or ignore the realities of our lives. It means we begin including ourselves among those for whom we are responsible. We remember that we are also worthy of the care, patience, protection, and attention we give so freely to others.

The journey of knowing ourselves does not follow a schedule, nor does it reveal everything at once. Certain parts of who we are become visible only after life has carried us through experiences that deepen our understanding and change the way we see ourselves. We do not simply arise one day with every question answered and every hidden part illuminated. Self-discovery unfolds gradually through the challenges we face, the choices we make, the responsibilities we carry, and the quiet spaces in which we finally permit ourselves to look within.

I am discovering myself every day, one day and one moment at a time. The person I was yesterday taught me something about the person I am today, and the person I am today is preparing the way for who I am still becoming. I do not have to rush that unfolding, but I must remain present for it. Patience does not mean continuing to postpone myself. It means allowing each truth to reveal itself without demanding that I understand my entire life at once.

Perhaps this is what the zero within 10 offers us. Zero permits us to pause without believing that we have become unproductive or lost. It invites us to empty ourselves of the pressure to have every answer. It asks us to sit without performing and to listen without immediately trying to turn what we hear into another task. Within that sacred emptiness, we may begin noticing the parts of ourselves we overlooked while trying to survive.

Then the 1 can arise—not as a stranger we are trying to become, but as a more conscious expression of the person who has been within us all along. The beginning does not always require a dramatic change. It may begin with ten quiet minutes, one honest boundary, one neglected desire acknowledged, or one promise to stop pushing ourselves aside. What matters is that the movement comes from a place of truth rather than exhaustion, comparison, fear, or obligation.

If you have spent years caring for everyone else, you do not need to judge yourself for the parts of you that were overlooked. Honor the person who carried you through those years. Honor the strength it took to survive, provide, nurture, and continue. Then allow yourself to become still enough to ask what now needs your attention. You do not have to recover every forgotten part of yourself in one day. You only need to begin making room.

Let the number 10 remind you that nothingness is not the end of your story. The empty space may be the place where your next truth is gathering its strength. Silence may be preparing you to hear your own voice more clearly, and the pause may be creating room for a beginning that could not enter while you were holding everything else.

As you continue with your day, I invite you to sit quietly and consider this question: What part of yourself have you continued to postpone while waiting for a better moment, and what small space can you create for that part of you today?

You do not have to discover yourself all at once. Allow yourself to become present for

the discovery, one day and one sacred moment at a time.

From my heart to yours,

Stay within the Light.

Amazing the way you write about 0 (zero) as for many it just empty, non-existence. Appreciate your time and you dear Ayka. Keep moving forward.
